Sports Journalist Association of Kenya (SJAK) executive officials met with Athletics Kenya (AK) officials led by Nairobi and national youth chairman Barnaba Korir, vice president Paul Mutwii, Chief Administrative Officer Susan Kamau and Treasurer David Miano, on Tuesday, September 5th to discuss on how to forge a better relationship between the federation and the association.

SJAK led by their president James Waindi, explained that the association would like to engage and work with Athletics Kenya on upcoming events to ensure that information is disseminated to all media houses.

“This meeting is an introduction of SJAK executive members to the federation. We would like to engage and work with you in marketing and growing the sport. We came into the office when most activities in the AK calendar have already started rolling. So far we 64 new members who are eager to get international exposure in athletics and other sports,” said Waindi.

Waindi also added that SJAK is in rapport with experienced veteran journalist to do media training for journalist on how to cover athletics events and to nature talent.

Speaking at the AK headquarters in Nairobi, Korir said the SJAK is an important partner to athletics and would like to hold an official introduction meeting with AK executive.

“I have worked with many of you and we have a close working relationship with most of you.  We have to look at a bigger picture on how to work together with the old and new SJAK office. We are behind in our communication strategy and the National Olympics Committee of Kenya is doing a better job in that department.” Said Korir.

Korir emphasized that the partnership is not meant to cover up for the federation and asked for corrections if mistakes are done. He noted that AK president lieutenant General (RTD) Jackson Tuwei, is keen on mentorship program for young journalists.

The national youth chairman also added that the federation has been affected by the doping menace, gender based violence and sexual abuse cases that need journalist to help with.
