Kenya finished seventh in the just ended African Nations junior women’s handball Championship in Monastir, Tunisia. The East Africans defeated Mali 39-33 in the event that had attracted 10 nations.
The Kenya juniors qualified for the continental showpiece after they won against Tanzania 34-16 during the qualifiers early this year in Dar es Salaam.
The development saw Kenya who were returning to event that they last participated in 2015, miss out on the World Championship that will be held in North Macedonia.
Angola won against Egypt 30-26 to emerge overall winners, of the biennial event while Guinea saw off hosts Tunisia 36-31 to place third.
The top five teams booked their tickets to the Worlds.
Status quo remained as Angola, Egypt, Guinea and Tunisia represented the continent during the last edition that was held in Slovenia with only additional being Algeria who finished fifth after they beat Cote d’Ivoire 26-19.
Kenya Handball Federation official Charles Omondi said the players who were drawn from various Secondary School across the country had picked timely exposure and experience that will come in handy in future events.
“It has been long since we fielded the team in this event. We made a comeback this year and I think it’s a fair result considering we picked players from different schools to train together within a short period .Obviously, it would have taken time for them to gel,” said Omondi.
