Focus will now shift to the Baseball Five League after Wreckers won the second edition of the National Olympics Committee of Kenya ( NOCK) Baseball Five Beach Games at the Buntwani Waterfront Park in Malindi in an event dubbed Easter weekend.
Wreckers’ rivals National Youth Service ( NYS) settled for third place during the NOCK showpiece held last weekend but are still convinced they have what it takes to ruffle feathers in the upcoming league.
Speaking on Thursday in Nairobi following his arrival from Malindi, NYS Team Manager Wycliffe Asila was in upbeat mood.
Asila sounded quite febrile and bullish, adding that his boys fought courageously despite difficulties that nippedtheir spirited campaign in the bud.
But the NYS tactician is overly excited that his team is getting better by the day and that rivals Wreckers were no better than his charges.
Asila spoke with febrile intensity as he claimed that their adversaries only savored a good day at the office while in Malindi, and promised that his charges will be back in the saddle in the upcoming league.
“We fought fiercely, but our adversaries got the better of us,” quipped Asila.
“After winning all our preliminary games on Saturday, fatigue eventually took its toll on us on Sunday during the semis against Wreckers, which meant missing an opportunity grace the finals”
“But then again, we managed to pick up against Mavericks and got our mitts on third place trophy,” said Asila, adding that his main concern is to beef up his squad with more sturdy and talented players.
Asila is determined to win titles in future events as the NOCK beach games and the league which will be announced in due course as clubs await for fixtures.
After a triumphatic last Saturday for the NYS, a recharged Mavericks beat them by 19 runs to two and stormed their way into the finals to meet Reapers who had won against Wreckers in the other semifinal.
Wreckers continued with their resurgence when they overpowered Reapers by 14 runs to six, claiming their maiden crown and overall title as champions.
The Malindi Beach Games saw the Baseball Five Tourney being a push, pull and shove between Wreckers, Mavericks, infernos, Veterans, NYS, Reapers and home team Pwani University who all showed up with zeal in their quest for the second edition of the NOCK beach games title.
With all seven clubs now back at their training bases, Nairobi based NYS is taking a one week break before returning to practice as now Asila plans to bolster his side with new blood, with the main objective being to win a Baseball Five Tournament and league title.
