A record 360 boys and girls of between the age sets of 13- 17 years graced the International Day of Sports at Starehe Boys Cente, Sunday in Nairobi.
Speaking after the event, that was organized by Utawala Star Sports Club and Save the Earth Global in partnership with UNESCO, team leader Caroline Wangari was excited to host schools and clubs from Nairobi and Machakos Counties saying that the event also served as a life skills learning opportunity among the boys and girls through sports.
“It has been an amazing day for us with all these children showing up for this great event. They go back home having grasped vital skills, and of utmost importance, is how they can use sports in society to create a harmonious peaceful environment that can lead to having successful inter relations among family members; and even when they go back to school and have to interact with their teachers and classmates,” said Wangari.
The youngsters also savored the opportunity to familiarize with dynamics of little known sports such as Tchoukball, Lacrosse,khokho and Kabaddi.
The world’s most popular sport, football, featured prominently on the program and had come last on the list of the day’s events, enjoyed by all and sundry.
Apart from the six clubs that participated, Schools that graced the event were Kifaru Primary, Githunguri Primary, St John’s Baptist, Gikabu Mwangaza Primary school, Utawala Secondary, Mavoko Boys as Michael May FA Academy, MyFugo Foundation, Nairobi County Academy, Joy Love Academy, Young Kings and Britania FC were the clubs that showed up.
The event was divided into two sessions where the first one involved a lot of play while session two featured an open forum to discuss how sports enhances peace and development in society, affects Climate Change, sports for mental wellbeing and intersex awareness.
