Braeburn Swimming Club won both the girls and boys categories at the just concluded Kenya Aquatics National Short Course Swimming Championships at the Mpesa Foundation in Thika town, Kiambu County last weekend l, an event that attracted a record 42 Swimming clubs across the country and one from Uganda.
Speaking from Mombasa County on Monday, the Chairperson of the Technical Committee for Kenya Aquatics Mr Omari Omar emphasized the need for more local competitions that will serve as a measure of prowess for swimmers and clubs before being selected to the national team.
” We need more Swimming Clubs from other parts of the country and not just from the usual Nairobi and Mombasa because now there is a lot of interest emerging from school going children, something that the federation should take advantage of now before it’s too late,” said the technical committee chairperson adding that the national Swimming Championships also served as a qualifier for upcoming international competitions, including the ninth Africa Aquatics Swimming Championship slated for Burundi this coming November and the World Aquatics Swimming Championship in Budapest, Hungary in December.
The nail biting event saw Otters Swimming Club securing the first runners-up position in the girls’ category and 2nd Runners Up in boys category.
Torpedoes Swimming Club from Kampala, Uganda clinched the first runners-up in the boys’ category while Torpedo Swimming Club from Eldoret town took the second runners-up spot in the girls’ category.
Dr. John Kimbe, Director of Torpedoes Swimming, commended the excellent organization of the event and noted the high level of competition which benefited his swimmers, noting with interest that he has now officially invited Kenyan swimmers to participate in the upcoming national Swimming meet in Uganda that has already been scheduled for the month of June this year.
Kenya Aquatics is now preparing for the local long course Swimming Championship in June also this year at the Kasarani Aquatics Arena, an event that is expected to feature teams from Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and
Rwanda.
