Kenya dominated the ninth edition of the Korean Ambassadors Taekwondo Cup, held at the Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala, Uganda on June 1-2, 2024.

Faith Adhiambo was awarded the Most Valuable Player (MVP) after winning gold in the Kyorugi -also known as sparring – which is a free-form fight between two people subject to strict rules to avoid injuries and to ensure a fair competition- in the senior women under 46 kgs category. Adhiambo won against Ashley Munyasia in the finals after beating Terry Alaro of Uganda in the semi-finals. Munyasia was forced to settle for silver.

In the women U-57kgs, Dock Stacy of Kenya conquered host, Akello Eunice from Uganda police, while Rebeccah Maria settled for bronze in the Kyorugi senior women’s Over-73kg category.

While Hazeny Lumwach won Uganda’s sole gold medal in the women’s U-52kg.

The event attracted 250 athletes, including 131 senior males, 33 senior women, 65 boys and 21 girls. Uganda had 19 clubs while Kenya sent six clubs which include, Regional Taekwondo Club, Ragumo, Kisumu Taekwondo, ICY Kenya, Madera Taekwondo and the Swift Kicks Taekwondo Club.

The event was graced by chief guest, Korean Ambassador Park Sung Soo, who praised the growth of Taekwondo in Uganda.

“I would also like to express gratitude for the dedication and contribution of Taekwondo coaches from the different parts of the country and the players. The tournament has since 2017 become a wonderful platform to showcase the Ugandan people’s love and passion for Taekwondo. Now, Taekwondo serves as an art and a means of connecting the people of Korea and bring them together in Uganda. Through Taekwondo, Ugandans and Koreans are getting much closer every day. I am hopeful that this Taekwondo spreads from the Ugandan military to other parts of the country.” Said Soo.
