Officials of sports federations concurrently holding administrative and technical roles should immediately relinquish one of them, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has directed.
Ababu, in a directive issued on Thursday said the move would ensure separation of duties in the country’s sports federations.
According to Ababu, the directive would ensure that there was clear separation of powers in federations where some officials were holding administrative and technical positions at the same time.
It was not immediately clear whether the Cabinet Secretary’s directive would affect federation administrators who are serving technical roles in Kenyan teams to the 2024 Paris Olympics set for July-August.
“Effective immediately, officials of national sports organisations holding multiple positions are required to relinquish either their administrative or technical roles,” the directive read in part.
Ababu went on to say: “The directive aims to ensure a clear separation of duties, thereby enhancing governance and operational efficiency within our national sports organisations.”
He said the directive was prompted by numerous complaints about management challenges in a number of national sports federations in Kenya.
The CS said cases of officials taking up multiple duties in federations had resulted in overlapping of roles especially in major national exercises among them appointment of technical teams as well as selection of players, referees and umpires to international championships.
“Notabley, some officials are serving in multiple capacities, in leadership or overlapping leadership, administrative and technical roles.
“This overlap has led to conflicting duties hindering effective oversight, accountability and the overall performance and the integrity of Kenya’s sports programs,” Ababu said in his directive.
He further asked administrators of sports federations to take necessary steps to comply with the directive.
“Your cooperation is essential in promoting a more structured and professional management framework within our sports federations,” the Sports CS added.
