Dereck Okova emerged the overal winner of the Nairobi Hospital Children’s Charity Golf tournament on Friday after he amassed a total of 48 points to be declared champion.
Speaking at the event’s venue, the Karen Country Golf Club in Nairobi, Okova was jubilated to have participated in the national event saying that his greatest win was to save the 20 children that will undergo the free heart surgeries at Nairobi Hospital this year from the targeted 10 million Ksh that was fund raised.
” It’s a tough course here at Karen. 18 holes are not easy, so emerging the overall winner is a great feeling, but the biggest win goes to the 20 children that we hope will have free heart surgeries and now we can pray to God for their lives to be saved,” said the Kenya Pipeline Company ( KPC) General Manager ( GM) Operations and Maintenance.
William Muguima from Sigona Golf Club emerged the Man winner with 44 points while Duncan Kuvuitu was runner up with 42 points in that category as Kalee Maleli became the Lady winner with 40 points, one a drift of runner up Ivy Katee at 39 points.
Mary Mbataru won the best 1st nine with 24 points, one a drift of Raj Shah who claimed the 2nd best nine with 23 points as Frank Moi won the nearest to pin while The Longest Drive Lady was Marya Nyambura, an event that saw Nathan Mwangi up for the top hornours for the Longest Drive Man.
The other categories saw Dr Samwel Odede win the Staff Winner, Philip Waki claiming the Board Member winner while the best admitting Staff Winner went to Dr Kaisha.
The Nairobi Hospital together with its partners, through the Hospital’s Children’s Charity Heart Fund, have sponsored free heart operations for needy children aged 0 – 12 years with congenital heart conditions for several years now.
This drive has seen more than 400 deserving children from different parts of the country benefit from the Kshs. 10 million find raised to cater for the treatment of at least 20 children.
According to James Nyamongo, Chief Executive Officer ( CEO ) Nairobi Hospital, the cost of surgery and post-surgery care is between Kshs.550,000 to Kshs.800,000 per child depending on the complexity of the heart condition, the Hospital is therefore encouraging partners to adopt one or more children to facilitate their surgery.
The corporate sponsorship packages have the Platinum (Kshs.1 Million), Gold (Kshs.750,000), Silver (Kshs.500,000) and Bronze (Kshs.300,000).
