The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Leagues and Competitions Committee has postponed the Super Cup match pitting Kenya Police Bullets and Ulinzi Starlets that was set for Saturday, following the demise of Ulinzi coach Joseph Wambua.
Wambua will be laid to rest on the same day, forcing the postponement to give room for his team and colleagues to pay final respect.
The match, which marks the official start of the new season of the FKF Women’s Premier League, was scheduled to be played at the Police Sacco Stadium before the change.
Wambua, who has been coaching Ulinzi Starlets since 2018, passed away on Friday, September 20, after a long battle with colon cancer.
“I think it’s a good move to postpone the match to give respect to the fallen soldier. He was a great coach with a promising future but since we have no control, we just pray for God’s comfort upon his family and the club in this difficult time,” Police FC Executive Chairman Nyale Munga said, in his comments about the postponement.
Mwanza’s coaching journey began in 2016; just a year after his promising playing career was cut short due to a devastating injury.
Starting out with Kahawa Queens, Mwanza quickly proved his ability. His breakthrough came when he took charge of Kahawa United men’s team in 2017, guiding them in the County League to an impressive unbeaten run of 23 matches.
In 2018, the Kenya Defence Forces appointed him head coach of Ulinzi Starlets.
Under him, Ulinzi Starlets lifted their third Women’s Cup last season.
Nyale however remained optimistic Police Bullets will win the rescheduled match.
“We are the champions and I have no doubt that Bullets will win the FKF Super Cup and the league. I only have a problem with the men’s team, which we definitely have more work to do to get where we want. As for the girls, we have full confidence in their capabilities,” he explained.
FKF Super Cup is played between the Premier League champions and FKF Cup champions, and it acts as the curtain raiser for the new season.
