Kenya Premier League side Mathare United has suspended four of it’s senior players for participating in unsanctioned tournaments.
Sending a message on their official Facebook page on Wednesday, the club said that it has taken disciplinary action against four players, suspending them with immediate effect for two weeks without pay for breach of contract.
“They are Kevin Kimani, Elli Asieche, Brian Ouru and Eric Mulu who were involved in an unsanctioned match/tournament just days before our matchday six league encounter with Police FC without the knowledge of the club,” read the statement.
Mathare United lost against Police FC on 23rd October by two unanswered goals away at Police Sacco Stadium before returning the same favor to Talanta FC three days later at Dandora Stadium, a game that saw the suspended Elli Asieche grab the match winner in the 62nd minute.
By doing so, they broke several clauses in their contracts, one being that a player, should maintain a high standard of physical fitness at all times and not to indulge in any sport, activity or practice that might endanger their fitness,” added the club statement.
Earlier on Afc leopards ( Ingwe) and Gormahia (K’ogallo) fans took to social media complaining that some of their players were no show when their respective clubs needed them for the much more important three KPL points only to be seen playing the Sunday leagues and tournaments.
Ingwe lost against Murang’a Seals at St Sebastian Park while league defending champions Gormahia lost against a lowly Nairobi City Stars, results that have now raised question marks when it comes to the commitment of players to their clubs and contracts.
Kenya’s first tier football league resumes this weekend as an eager anticipation now fills the air from fans with a disciplinary expectation from KPL clubs.
