Sports Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen said the sport’s local governing body Athletics Kenya (AK) had submitted the bid and the government was going to support the initiative.
Murkomen was speaking when visiting AK headquarters on Wednesday, November 6th, 2024.
Murkomen said they were working on putting in place the necessary works for Kenya to meet the hosting requirements.
“We are working on renovations at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani and the Nyayo National Stadium to make sure that they conform to the international standards in readiness for the bid,” said Murkomen.
The minister said Kenya has the capacity of hosting the event after successfully hosting the World under 18 and 20 Championships in Nairobi.
AK president Jackson Tuwei confirmed Kenya’s candidature saying they have put up a stronger bid after losing the 2025 hosting rights to Tokyo and was optimistic of the country winning the bid.
World Athletics selected Tokyo to host its World Championships in 2025, with the Japanese capital beating rival bids from Nairobi, Silesia (Poland) and Singapore.
World Athletics president Lord Sebastian Coe said: “Within an extremely strong field of candidates to host the World Athletics Championships 2025, Tokyo offered a compelling bid.
“I hope this will be a shining light for Japan as they celebrate 100 years of the Japanese Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) in 2025, by bringing world-class athletics back to the people in Tokyo.”
