In a stunning display of prowess, the Kenya U20 national team, Chipu, emerged victorious in the 2024 Barthes Trophy, defeating former champions Zimbabwe 28-13 in a thrilling encounter at Harare Sports Club’s Machinery Exchange Stadium.
This resounding victory not only secured Chipu’s claim to the Barthes Trophy but also earned them a coveted spot in the World Rugby U20 Trophy in Scotland, marking their third appearance in the prestigious global event since 2019.
Chipu’s journey to the title began with a hard-fought 36-28 win over Namibia, followed by a commanding 56-17 victory against Tunisia in the pool stage matches.
The clash with Zimbabwe held particular significance, as it marked a rematch of the 2023 Barthes Cup finals, where Zimbabwe’s Junior Sables had emerged victorious with a 28-7 win over Chipu. Additionally, Zimbabwe had dealt a heavy defeat to Chipu in the World Rugby U20 Trophy fifth-place match, prevailing 64-10.
However, Chipu entered the 2024 tournament as underdogs, with previous losses and limited preparation time. Despite this, they were determined to turn the tables.
In a tense opening, Zimbabwe took an early lead with a try from a lineout and maul, but Chipu quickly responded, narrowing the gap to 10-7 by halftime with tries from Iddo Kuta and Michael Wamalwa, despite Bramwel Anekea’s yellow card.
The Kenyan team dominated the second half, with Olela extending their lead through penalties. Despite a brief resurgence from Zimbabwe, Chipu held firm, sealing their victory with tries from Patrick Wainaina and Andycolle Omollo, along with a penalty kick from Philip Okeyo, ending the match with a final score of 28-13.
Chipu’s triumph not only secured the Barthes Trophy but also showcased their resilience and determination, solidifying their status as a force to be reckoned with in the world of rugby.
