A group of former players, coaches and journalists organised a recognition ceremony for legendary Kenyan volleyball coach David Lung’aho ‘Demosh’ at the Moi International Sports Centre indoor arena Kasarani in Nairobi over the weekend.

The ceremony which was conducted during the Kenya Volleyball Federation National League playoffs final on Saturday was in celebration and honor of the Lung’aho’s remarkable contributions and achievements to the sport.

The ceremony saw Lung’aho, a Chief Inspector at Prisons awarded a washing machine, and a mounting portrait.

Lung’aho has had coaching stints with both the men national team Wafalme Stars and the national women’s team Malkia Strikers.

During his reign with the Malkia Strikers, Demosh guided the team to win the historic 2015 FIVB World Grand Prix in Australia as well as the Africa Nations Cup titles in 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, and 2015

Lung’aho boasts of several National League titles with various clubs.

He won the 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 league titles while he bagged the coveted titles with Kenya Prison in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013.

At the African Clubs Championship, Demosh guided the Oilers to nag Golf medals in 2004 and 2005 before taking a bronze medal in 2006.

At Prisons, he won gold medals in 2008,2009,201,2011,2012 and 2013 consecutively.

Lung’aho earned individual recognition as the coach of the year during the 2012 and 2015 SOYA Awards, 2012 and 2015 Magharibi Awards and 2018 Magharibi coach of the decade.

Lung’aho earned Head of State Commendations in 2005 (Civilian Division) and 2012 (Military Division).

Lung’aho began his educational journey at Lenana Primary School in Nakuru, where his athletic prowess was evident early on.

His passion for volleyball grew at Lake Nakuru High School, a passion deeply rooted in his family’s legacy of love for sports.

His professional volleyball journey began in 1986 when he joined Kenya Railways. From 1988 to 1994, he played for the Railways Club, receiving his first call-up to the national team in 1989.

He was later appointed national team captain, a role he held from 1993 to 1997. His exceptional talent as a setter led to an international playing career spanning 16 years.

In 1994, he moved to KCB, where he continued his career and pursued coaching.

His dedication to coaching began in earnest in 1996 with his first national coaching course, followed by multiple international courses, including FIVB Level One in 1997, FIVB Level II in 2000, and FIVB Beach Volleyball.

Beyond his professional achievements, he is also a devoted family man, blessed with three sons (Rodgers Mutsami, Arsen Mulechi, and Walcott Malenya) who, while yet to embrace volleyball like their father, undoubtedly carry forward his legacy of dedication and excellence.
